Start Exploring!

This Afrikaans Virtual Experience includes Afrikaans tutors talking about the language, their approaches to teaching it and advice to us learners. Plus I’m interviewing fellow learners to explore why we decided to learn Afrikaans and our experiences as learners.

You will see my videos are relaxed conversations rather than formal interviews, because my belief is that language learning should be fun and an exploration of the world and all its peoples.  I believe the learner is responsible for their own learning journey and instead of spending hours alone with verb tables, we should seek interactions with like minded tutors, native speakers and people-based materials.

Dec14 About Me & Why…

As an Afrikaans language learner I have found it quite difficult to find other learners and language resources, so I wanted to create a place to bring some of these together and where people can share their experiences and discoveries with each other.

After visiting South Africa in 2011, and marrying a South African, I was introduced to Afrikaans and the love affair started.  I cannot put my finger on exactly what draws me to Afrikaans, but I do know that the Afrikaans language and the warmth of the Afrikaner people have completely won my heart.  I love how the words sound and feel to speak, I am constantly finding fun new words that surprise and amuse me because of their sounds, incredible length or very literal meaning. They make me smile and for some reason stick in my mind in a way that no other language ever has.  Afrikaans is such a fun and colourful language!

I am still very much a beginner, but am enjoying immensely my Afrikaans language learning journey. Would you like to join me?

  1. Hi there

I’m a native Afrikaans speaker. It’s good to see someone taking an interest in Afrikaans! I also realize how hard it is to find adequate resources on the internet. If you haven’t checked it out, http://forum.unilang.org/ has an Afrikaans section. It has been quiet, but myself and one or two other users check in regularly. So feel free to ask questions and explore the Afrikaans section. It’s not much, but it’s easier for some people to correspond via forums than say live chat.

    Cheers

    1. Hallo Will

Thank you for commenting. I have just quickly checked out UniLang, thank you I`d not come across it before but I will definitely be spending some time on there. I currently don`t get much practice writing in Afrikaans so that would be really great for me also.

      Baie dankie
      Kelly
